With water levels rising and rain continuing to fall in many areas, police are again reminding motorists and members of the public to stop and think about their manner of driving and not risk all by entering flood waters. Police are also advising the community to:
• Slow down and drive in a manner suitable for the current wet weather conditions. Motorists need to adapt their driving to suit the wet and slippery roads;
• Take extra care, re-think travel plans and limit non-essential travel if possible in areas experiencing heavy rainfalls or localised flooding;
• Avoid flooded roads, creeks and watercourses;
• Be alert to the deceptively powerful nature of currents, especially during periods of heavy rain. The current, both in waterways and water covering roads can be extremely strong and people and vehicles can be swept away in a instant;
• Remember that road conditions and road closures can change rapidly as creeks and water courses can rise and fall quickly;
Members of the public should monitor local radio stations for updates and contact support agencies or their local council for road closure updates or the RACQ on 1300 130 595 or www.racq.com.
